CAFEO 33, 2015

Penang, Malaysia • 22-26 November

Welcome

PENANG is hosting the 33rd Conference of the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisation 2015 to be held from 22nd to 25th November.

The lnstitution of Engineers, Malaysia (lEM) Penang Branch, as the main host, is pleased to invite other engineering organizations, universities and R&D institutions to participate in this prestigious conference & exhibition with the theme below:

ln 7786, Captain Francis Light discovered George Town; a strategic occupation that acknowledged Penang's natural resources, harbour and its potential for commerce and as a British command station.

From a humble trading port, Penang has developed over two centuries into a vital, world-class hub for commerce, manufacturing, modernization, cultures and tourism that it is today. lt has been dubbed the Silicon Valley of Southeast Asia, most liveable and best city and a World Heritage Site. The iconic Penang Bridge was Southeast Asia's longest in 1985 and Komtar Tower was Asia's tallest building in 1986. Today exists an even longer Second Penang Bridge.

Like other Asean big cities, Penang's tremendous growth was in big part thanks to the many, many engineers working diligently behind the scene. As key builders, engineers would continue to face up to the challenges of designing and constructing many future Asean "world cities."

Penang's Many Attractions

The State and some 1.6+ million Penangites & residents (including 30,000 engineers) welcome you to the Pearl of the Orient!

We are among the top-3 most developed and economically important states in Malaysia, an exceptional multi-cultural city with well-preserved heritage, and a popular tourist destination and food haven, especially for hawker's fare. Visitors come all year round to enjoy its sunny equatorial weather on the island. An umbrella may come in handy to ward off the occasional rain and intense midday sun. Yes, there are beaches and some are still quite pristine, plus a fair share offorested hills and greenery.

While here speak Malay, Chinese, Tamil or English and someone is bound to understand you. There are established prayer houses for those of Muslim, Buddhist, Christian and Hindu faiths. And there are festivals and events to celebrate every month.

22 November 2015 features the Penang Bridge lnternational Marathon; Penang lnternational Dragon Boat Race; George Town Literary Festival; Penang Jazz Festival; Pesta Chingay, Lion and Dragon Dance Parade and, of course, Christmas and New Year. Nearby in Langkawi there are also the Langkawi GeoFest and Asian Bird Fair.

Penang lndustry: We are an industrialised state with 40 years track record in electronics manufacturing, assembly and test operations. Today Penang is also a design and development hub with world-class local supporting and ancillary industries; with renowned capabilities in automation systems, precision engineering, software development and packaging. There is also a growing support services for medical devices, aerospace and other higher value added activities.

AFEO

The ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organizations (AFEO) is a non-governmental organization affiliated to the ASEAN Secretariat. Members of the AFEO are Engineering lnstitutions and Unions of countries in ASEAN. The Objectives of AFEO are the promotion of goodwill, understanding, cooperation and exchange of ideas and experiences in the fields of education, science, engineering, technology, environment, human resource, training and registration of professional engineers.

The Conference of the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organizations (CAFEO) has been held annually since 1982 by 10 ASEAN member countries, including Brunei, lndonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar. The AFEO Conference has also attracted the participation of engineering organizations of the USA, Japan, Korea, Australia, China, lndia, Germany and the UK, the World Federation of Engineering organizations (WFEo) and ASEAN Academy of Engineering and Technology (MET).

Introduction to The Institution of Engineers Malaysia

The lnstitution of Engineers, Malaysia (lEM) was established in 1959 and mainly to promote and advance the science and profession of engineering in any or all of its disciplines and to facilitate the exchange of information and ideas related to engineering.

It currently has about 30,000 members and ranks among the largest professional organizations in the country. IEM has eight Standing Committees, 18 Technical Divisions and three Special lnterest Groups plus a Graduate and Student Section that caters exclusively to the younger members.

All the members are to participate actively in all engineering-related issues in society so that our expert views and contributions would be appreciated and acknowledged.

Summary

The present paper describes a hull form improvement of innovative low-speed Ultra large Block coefficient ship(ULBS).A hull form optimization method for reducing wave-making resistance and wave-breaking at the bow using nonlinear programming method (NLP)based on the Rankine source method is discussed. In the optimization process, wave-making resistance coefficient, surface integrals of the square of free surface elevations and free surface disturbance function D(x, y)-values are selected as the objective functions. Bow-body shape is optimized under the prescribed design constraints based on the present method. Numerical examples are given for unconventional ULBS. The three improved hull forms for the corresponding objective functions are obtained by optimal designs which indicate that the objective functions are reduced distinctly. In order to verify the present optimization method based on the potential solver, the flow characteristics around the initial and bow optimized hull forms are analyzed by using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis based on the Nervier-Stokes (NS) solver. Comparisons of the computed resistance coefficients, pressure and velocity distributions of the initial and bow optimized hull forms are presented. It is confirmed that simulation results based on the viscous flow solver show reasonable agreements with the numerical results based on the Rankine source method for the bow optimized hull forms.
